James Abbott McNeill Whistler, a dandy, argumentative, etcher and exquisite painter. He advocated “art for art’s sake”, took John Ruskin to a financially ruinous trial - although he won - and went his own way. We look at his work and eventful life. A major retrospective of Whistler’s work is being held at Tate Britain until 27 September 2026.
